The article "The Whole Ball of Wax," by Jerry Saltz is a beautiful piece of work that argues how art is not and will never be dead, furthermore how art has the power to change the world. He states that "art can change the world
incrementally and by osmosis," which I think ties the two ideas of art being a world changer and it always being alive. It does this by focusing on how art will change the world like osmosis which in scientific terms means "a process by which molecules of a solvent tend to pass through a semipermeable membrane from a less concentrated solution into a more concentrated one, thus equalizing the concentrations on each side of the membrane." This might seem irrelevant to art, but that is exactly what the author wants to portray, that art is in everything, even in scientific terms. Art penetrates into all facets of life including politics, math, science, you name it! As long as these areas are alive and concentrated, art will penetrate in there too.
The author mentions how "Art is a bridge to a new vision and the vision itself, a medium or matrix
through which one sees the world." This bridge or matrix is what keeps art boundless, despite what other people think or believe which as mentioned in the article may sometimes be that art is not reasonable therefore it does not exist. I think one of my favorite arguments that the author presents is how art is an experience not a simple thought. "I experience, therefore
I am," as Milan
Kundera said, because when you experience you not only think and absorb the moment but also feel and experience the beauty in it, which to me is enough to say that art is not only real but also in action. Paintings, film, music, etc, are all made by someone who felt a certain way and used this means to express those feelings. When art is shared, the painting speaks to the one who appreciates it and acts in different ways inside the viewer like it did to Cassese. I must agree with author and say that art is definitely alive and will always be, but most importantly, it has changed and will continue to change the world in many ways that begin by changing the way we look at this flawed and sometimes ugly world we live in.
